Target Audience: DYCD funded youth service professionals working with young men of color (YMOC)

Series Description: YMOC face unique barriers in seeking and receiving mental health services. Cultural, societal and gender norms and expectations, and lack of access to culturally competent services are a few of the obstacles they encounter. The escalating rate of suicide among YMOC speaks to this population’s growing need for emotional support. This four-part workshop series will offer professionals effective strategies for engaging YMOC in mental health services. Each session will showcase a guest speaker, a young man from The Fellowship Initiative (TFI) an academic, mentoring and social support program for YMOC.

Session 1 Description: Overcoming Obstacles to Help-Seeking in YMOC

The first of four sessions in the series will identify the steps to engaging YMOC: creating safety, building trust and destigmatizing mental health issues. It will include interactive small and large-group discussions, followed by a Q & A session with a guest speaker, a college student from The Fellowship Initiative (TFI), who will speak about the challenges he overcame to seek and receive mental health services in high school.
