Employability skills are vital to the success of our youth, but they are often taught in the vacuum of workforce development. Likewise, academics tend to be relegated to their own section of some programs. Providers should be using academic development to grow the youths’ employability skills and vice versa. This approach needs to be seamlessly integrated and contextualized. Research indicates that blending academic content with workforce development is a successful method for providing youth with 21st century skills. In this training we will analyze products of this integration, discuss the importance of building basic skills in the context of workforce readiness and learn to identify the integration of literacy, numeracy and employability skills.
