Target Audience: This session is open to all DYCD-funded program staff, supervisors, and site directors who work with youth and have attended foundational Motivational Interviewing training previously.
Description:
This session will expand upon the rationale for Motivational Interviewing strategies and techniques and how their use can increase client’s internal motivation, decrease ambivalence and support staff in working collaboratively to help clients achieve their goals.
Using video, role play, and youth scenarios, this workshop will examine the guiding principles of an approach called Motivational Interviewing. Through exploring the stages of change, you will learn how to plan interventions that meet the youth where s/he is and help them move forward in their life. You will gain skills to facilitate conversations with young people that decrease their ambivalence and encourage motivation for positive change.
You will learn to listen for and elicit a young person’s internal reasons for making changes in their lives and help him/her achieve their goals.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1) Integrate Motivational Interviewing techniques into everyday work with clients
2) Develop conversational tools for increasing internal motivation and for decreasing ambivalence
3) Apply strategies that increase client’s progress toward goal achievement
Facilitated by: Dr. Andrew Hamid, Columbia University
