Supporting Individuals in Crisis:
Strategies for Preparedness and Response
October 22nd, 2019 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Crisis Happens.
How do you know when someone is experiencing a personal crisis?
What can you do to intervene and provide support?
With all the pressing issues in society, combined with personal and professional stresses, it is not uncommon for people to find themselves overwhelmed and feeling the emotional, physical, mental, and behavioral impacts of stress. Crisis situations and traumatic stress can interfere with a person’s sense of safety, emotional control, personal perception, sense of self-efficacy, and of course, their relationships. While responses to trauma can look like mental health issues, they not the same! They are reactions and usually do not result in a long lasting mental health problem.
This workshop will define personal crisis, review the body’s physiological stress response, and provide participants with tools to respond to individuals experiencing crisis. Participants will learn the CAPE model (Connecting, Appraising, Problem Solving and Engagement) for responding to individuals in crisis and will have opportunities to practice using role plays to support youth, parents, co-workers, and loved ones who may need support.
