IYLI supports development of scholars and youth activists and advocates of color. IYLI serves New York City students, ages 11-19. IYLI targets low income students. Science, Engineering, Mathematics. The goals are to increase student interest and performance in science, engineering and mathematics and related academic pathways, engage students in hands-on informal science, and make connections between science and engineering and community needs. Programs are designed to serve middle and high school students Middle School Enrichment, Service Learning and Leadership. Afterschool programs incorporate standards for writing, speaking and listening and develop skills in personal, career and academic planning, goal setting, and teamwork. Students explore identity, family, community and other cultures through activities drawing on NYC?s rich diversity. They use photography and art to capture and contrast community characteristics. Community Spirit and Development Program (CSDP). High school students plan and execute one or more service projects benefitting their community, the mission of their host organization and their own vision for change. Since 1990, IYLI has sponsored annual summer and winter leadership and academic study programs in Africa, Caribbean and Latin America. Each program curriculum is based on a theme, including energy, science, government, health, environment and cultural studies. IYLI co-sponsors bi-weekly seminars with NYU?s Liberty Partnerships Program. Seminars expose students to a college environment and engage students in examining that affect them. Seminars foster critical thinking and analysis based on the IYLI framework (history, culture, geography, environment). Seminars cultivate students’ presentation and communications skills. IYLI conducts college workshops and field trips.
